The respiring animal within the animal chamber creates pressure fluctuations within that chamber. When the chamber is sealed, these fluctuations relate to the animal’s tidal volume when the animal is breathing quietly, and relate to the effort of breathing, when the breathing is labored. When the chamber wall has a pneumotachograph, these fluctuations relate to the animal’s flow rate when the animal is breathing quietly, and relate to the effort of breathing, when the breathing is labored. In all cases the pressure fluctuation within the animal chamber are very tiny, since they are created by the difference of two comparable processes. Consider inspiration for example. Air enters the body of the animal and his thorax expands, increasing the pressure within the box. However, the air that entered his body was withdrawn from the box, thus decreasing the pressure within the box. A fitting with 2 holes is secured to the chamber wall. It mates with the ports of transducer. The transducer may be simply inserted into the pair of holes in the fitting. One hole connects to the animal chamber, and the other hole to the reference chamber. The Unrestrained Single Chamber Plethysmograph may be used for measurement of FLOW, or VOLUME.
