    * EF Johnson Viking Ranger Upgrade Kit: Upgrade kit consists of:  Solid State "Drive" control assembly, Solid State +300V and +150V regulator assemblies, LV Filter capacitor (typically either 50uf/450, or  100uf/450VDC), solid state plug in LV replacement rectifier assembly

    for the 6AX5, and a VFO Alignment Tool.  The solid state +300V regulator assembly is compatible with the Johnson Viking I & II, Johnson Valiant,  as well as the Johnson Ranger.
    * The Solid State VFO +150V regulator is a replacement for the 18K resistor/VR tube scheme in the Johnson VFO, this assembly is usable with the VFO 122, as well as any Johnson Transmitter that uses their "standard" VFO). The Solid State "Drive" control assembly is usable ( with a slight modification ie: moving the Drive potentiometer to the front panel to replace the original Drive control) also with the Viking I & II and Johnson Valiant.
    *Upgrade kit consists of: "Drive"  Control solid state assembly ,+ 150vdc VFO Regulator, Low B+ (300VDC)  Regulator , VFO Alignment tool, LV Filter capacitor ( typically 100uf/450VDC, or 50uf/500VDC), and plug in solid state replacement for the 6AX5 LV rectifier tube. ( 6 items) *** VFO Alignment Tool is applicable to any Johnson Transmitter that uses the "standard" Johnson VFO assembly. ****.

    The Solid State Drive Control  assembly replaces the 25K  "Drive" potentiometer, (a high failure rate item because it also acts as the 300VDC power supply bleeder resistor), and most likely will never need to be replaced or repaired. Operation of the "Drive Control" unit is very smooth and reliable. LV Bleeder current is reduced to a low value and thus heat generated is also reduced.  The potentiometer used in the "Drive unit"  is an Allen Bradley,Centralab or similiar high quality unit. The control element in both the +300V regulator and the Drive Unit is a high current power FET. The Solid State +300VDC regulator assembly tames the  low voltage Buss to +300VDC.

    When the +300V regulator assembly is installed, the Modulator Tube Screens
    may
    be connected directly to the +300V regulated buss, and the HV bleeder resistor removed ( replace with 2 X 470K/2w resistors, NOT included in this kit). IF you accomplish this, the original Modulator Fixed Bias circuit will need to be modified to allow for an adjustable bias voltage ( Email for details of this modification).
    * The Solid state 300VDC regulator assembly has been tested with DC inputs up to +375VDC or so.( Higher input voltages may require modification of the values of the shunt resistors ( See Schematic).  The Solid State VFO Regulator assembly allows you to remove the VFO dropping resistor and regulator tube ( both high failure items). ( VFO Shroud removal necessary to install the VFO Solid State Regulator assembly) . The solid state plug in 6AX5 assembly directly replaces the vacuum tube LV rectifier 6AX5 with no circuit modifications.  The parts used in these assemblies are new, rated for far more voltage and current than will ever be encountered in the Ranger

    * We have tested these assemblies in our shop before shipment. Resistor values on each of these assemblies may be altered for other B+ voltages.   We have tested the Drive , VFO regulator , solid state 6AX5 and 300VDC assemblies in our shop.  These control assemblies and the alignment tool are hand made, therefore each is slightly different,depending on the potentiometer and other parts available. Installation of these assemblies does take a bit of technical expertise and patience.
    * The VFO Alignment Tool allows you to accomplish a VFO periodic alignment even if, as is often the case, the original "alignment shaft spring assemblies" are missing or broken. We DO recommend when you overhaul your Ranger, you remove the original VFO "alignment pins" and discard them. Open holes in the VFO shroud may be plugged with appropriate metal or plastic hole plugs. ( NOT SUPPLIED).
